Moving a Link-Belt 80160 Rough Terrain Crane from California to Texas
Moving a 160-ton-class rough-terrain crane across the country isn't a one-truck operation.
For this project, we were tasked with transporting a Link-Belt 80160 rough-terrain crane from Southern California to a jobsite in Lamesa, Texas.
The move came together on short notice and required three separate truckloads.
The main crane traveled on a 9-axle heavy-haul configuration, while two additional trucks transported the crane's counterweights and supporting components.
The equipment then had to travel from Southern California into West Texas and arrive at the jobsite for a weekend delivery.
Here's what went into putting the move together.
Understanding the Link-Belt 80160
The Link-Belt 80160 is a large rough-terrain crane built for substantial lifting capacity while maintaining the maneuverability needed on construction and industrial jobsites.
Transporting a crane in this class is a different operation.
While smaller rough-terrain cranes can sometimes travel largely intact, increasing crane capacity also means dealing with substantially more machine weight.
The question becomes less about finding a trailer capable of carrying the entire crane and more about determining what stays with the main unit and what needs to travel separately.
For this project, the transportation plan was divided into three loads.
The main crane traveled by itself, while the counterweights were removed and distributed across two additional loads.
Moving the Main Crane on a 9-Axle
For the main unit, we utilized a 9-axle heavy-haul configuration.
With a crane this heavy, trailer selection isn't based simply on total carrying capacity. The weight has to be distributed appropriately across the tractor, trailer and axle groups.
Positioning the crane correctly becomes equally important.
Once loaded, the crane's placement affects axle weights, overall dimensions and ultimately the configuration that can be permitted for highway travel.
Using a 9-axle setup provided the heavy-haul configuration needed to transport the main crane from California into Texas while keeping the weight distributed across the combination.
Two Additional Counterweight Loads
The main crane was only part of the project.
The Link-Belt's counterweights traveled separately on two additional trucks.
Breaking the move into three loads reduced the weight traveling with the main crane while allowing the counterweights and additional components to move alongside it.
This is an important distinction when quoting crane transportation.
A customer may ask for a rate to move "one crane," but the actual transportation requirement can involve multiple trucks.
Understanding the crane's transport configuration before dispatch helps determine the real truck count, equipment requirements and cost of the project.
For the 80160, moving the crane meant coordinating three loads—not one.
Short-Notice Capacity
Another consideration was the timeline.
This project came together on short notice, which meant we had to secure the 9-axle heavy-haul equipment for the main crane while simultaneously coordinating two additional trucks for the counterweights.
Finding a truck is one thing.
Finding multiple pieces of specialized equipment that can load within the same project window, travel more than 1,000 miles and coordinate delivery is another.
Fortunately, loading itself went smoothly.
With the equipment and transportation plan established beforehand, the main crane and counterweight loads were able to get loaded and begin making their way east.
Southern California to West Texas
Once loaded, all three trucks began the trip from Southern California to Lamesa, Texas.
For the main crane, this meant managing a permitted heavy-haul move across multiple states.
The two counterweight loads also had to remain coordinated with the main unit so the complete crane could arrive within the customer's required delivery window.
That coordination matters on dealer-to-jobsite crane moves.
Delivering the crane body without the components needed to put the machine into service doesn't accomplish much.
The transportation plan has to account for the entire crane package, not simply the largest load.
Weekend Jobsite Delivery
The final piece of the project was delivery.
Instead of delivering to another dealership or equipment yard, the Link-Belt was headed directly to a jobsite in West Texas, with delivery scheduled over the weekend.
Jobsite deliveries require communication because unloading resources, site access and personnel need to be available when the trucks arrive.
With three trucks involved, timing becomes even more important.
The objective was to get the main crane and supporting loads into position so the customer had the equipment they needed without transportation becoming the bottleneck.
One Crane. Three Loads. More Than 1,000 Miles.
On paper, the request was to move a Link-Belt 80160 from California to Texas.
Operationally, the project looked much different.
One 9-axle heavy-haul combination carrying the main crane.
Two additional loads carrying counterweights and components.
Three trucks traveling from Southern California to West Texas.
A short-notice dispatch and weekend jobsite delivery.
There weren't any major loading problems or unexpected complications—and that's a good thing.
Heavy-haul transportation doesn't have to become a problem-solving exercise on every shipment. When the equipment is understood, the correct trailers are dispatched and the project is coordinated properly, even a 160-ton-class crane move can be executed without unnecessary drama.
For us, that's the objective: make the complicated moves feel routine.
