Transporting a Wirtgen W 210 XF from Ontario to Tracy, California
Not every heavy-equipment move needs to be complicated.
For this project, we transported a Wirtgen W 210 XF cold milling machine from Ontario, California, to Tracy, California in a single load.
The machine traveled with its conveyor attached, and the move required no pilot cars or additional trucks. While transporting a machine of this size still requires specialized equipment and proper planning, this was a relatively straightforward heavy-haul move from Southern California to Northern California.
And that's exactly how a well-planned equipment move should be.
Understanding the Wirtgen W 210 XF
The Wirtgen W 210 XF is a large cold milling machine designed for high-production pavement removal.
Machines in this class present a very different transportation profile than conventional construction equipment.
The W 210 XF weighs more than 60,000 pounds depending on its configuration, and its tracked undercarriage concentrates a significant amount of weight within a relatively small footprint.
Then there's the conveyor.
The conveyor system is essential to the milling operation, transferring milled material from the machine into trucks traveling alongside it. During transportation, however, that same system adds another consideration to the overall length and configuration of the load.
For our move, the conveyor remained attached to the machine, allowing the entire W 210 XF to travel as a single load.
Selecting the Right Heavy-Haul Equipment
The first step in planning a move like this is matching the machine to the transportation equipment.
It's not enough to ask whether a trailer can technically carry the weight.
The machine's weight, track placement, overall width, transport height and length all have to work with the trailer configuration.
Deck height is particularly important when transporting large construction equipment. The height of the machine itself is only part of the equation—the final permitted height is determined after the machine is sitting on the trailer.
Using the appropriate low-deck heavy-haul equipment helps keep that overall profile manageable while providing the capacity needed for a machine of this weight.
Loading a Large Tracked Milling Machine
Tracked equipment creates another consideration during loading.
As the W 210 XF climbs onto the trailer, tens of thousands of pounds transition onto the deck through its tracks.
Once the machine is fully loaded, positioning becomes important. The goal is to place the equipment where its weight can be properly distributed across the tractor and trailer axle groups while maintaining the required clearances.
This is where having a driver experienced with heavy construction equipment matters.
For this project, the Wirtgen was loaded in Ontario with the conveyor attached, properly positioned and secured for the trip north.
Ontario to Tracy
From Ontario, the W 210 XF traveled north to Tracy, California.
Because the entire machine could travel as a single unit, there was no need to coordinate additional trucks carrying removed components.
There were also no pilot cars required for this particular move.
That made the execution relatively simple:
One machine.
One heavy-haul truck.
One pickup in Southern California.
One delivery in Northern California.
Heavy Haul Doesn't Always Have to Be Complicated
Some of the projects we handle involve multiple trucks, escorts, complicated routing and tight project schedules.
Others don't.
This Wirtgen W 210 XF move was a good example of the latter.
The machine was identified, the appropriate transportation equipment was selected, the Wirtgen was loaded with its conveyor attached, and the equipment traveled from Ontario to Tracy as a single load.
There were no major surprises and no unusual complications.
That's an important part of heavy-equipment transportation that doesn't always get talked about.
The objective isn't to make a difficult move look impressive. It's to understand the equipment well enough to make the move uneventful.
When the equipment, trailer and transportation plan are matched correctly from the beginning, moving a 60,000+ pound milling machine can become just another day on the road.
